These gluten free sugar free chocolate brownies have been essential fare as we have been emerging from another Wonder Week, the period in which your baby’s brain takes a quantum leap forward and the world dissolves and remakes around her. (Handy tip: A Wonder Week doesn’t necessarily last for just a week….no one told me that!)

This Wonder ‘Week’ has been huge. From aged 14 -18 weeks, Sol has been grappling with Events, understanding that the world is shaped by rhythm, repetition and collaboration.

So a bouncing ball will no longer be:

‘A ball that goes down and NEVER comes back up! Oh yes, look it came back up but it will NEVER come back down.’

Instead it is becoming a bouncing ball as we know it. Maybe you could say Sol is understanding adverbs in actualisation? Or maybe I’m just sleep deprived and rashly throwing words around. Whatever, as new neurological pathways are forming and before they are fully set, the old way of seeing and being falls away and she is in a limbo state while the world physically melts and shifts around her.

Glimpsing the polyrhythmic transformations of the world is hard work and means…

she needs her Mama!

A month of waking for feeds and cuddles every two hours has left me with little time to do more than the bare minimum work I need to and to enjoy some of the beginning Spring, and laugh and hang and prioritise family and the utter splendour of seeing this bright beauty make with her world.


And eat chocolate brownies. Of course.

These are free of refined sugar and gluten and take all of 20 minutes to bash together and bake. Soft and a bit gooey, substantial with their base of ground almonds and loaded with cacao to boost your serotonin levels, they will see you through the waking with smiles of pure wonder.

Makes 12 brownies

1 1/4 cup almond meal
3 tbsp cacao powder
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp vanilla extract
½ cup rice m syrup or honey
3 free range eggs
½ cup coconut oil, melted

Line a baking tray with greaseproof paper and preheat the oven to 180 degrees.

Add all the ingredients to a food processor and blend. Pour the batter into the tray and bake for 15 – 20 minutes. You want the brownies to be just cooked so insert a skewer after 15 minutes and if it still has a few moist crumbs clinging to it, remove the brownies from the oven.

Leave to cool completely in the tray before cutting into squares.

    Hi Loveday! Thanks for the recipe, they turned out perfectly and are delicious. I especially love the throw it all in, mix and bake instructions. Super easy! I made them as a snack to see us through my labour – which I’m pre-empting will happen this weekend (fingers crossed, she’s 11 days ‘late’). If not, perhaps more baking will do the trick!

    I’ve just made these in preparation for a day in the garden with my flower fairy friend Sara. They are delicious! I hope she gets here soon as there might no be any left !!
