On the West coast of Sardinia, near the small medieval Catalan town of Alghero is a little homestay and vineyard run by Dino, Paola and Dario.
The white grape, Vermentino, is native to Sardinia. The grapes are harvested in September/October, pressed in the machine beneath this canvas, rested in large vats for a week and then transferred to steel barrels for a further 6 weeks.
After this time, some is bottled for export and some is shared with family, friends and, in true Sardinian style, with complete strangers like us who are welcomed into the family home.
There are no additives or filtering agents. The alcohol simply arises from the sugars on the grape skin. It produces an unusual slightly grassy, honey-flavoured white wine that is yet light and refreshing – it’s truly delicious.
